Russian Scientists to Create Record-Breaking Solid Materials

Russian experts of several research centers have found a way of creating polymeric materials having hardness significantly greater than that of diamond. The results of this work, published in the journal Carbon, can become the basis of a new direction in materials science.

Researchers from the Institute of Technology of Superhard and Novel Carbon Materials in Troitsk (TISNCM), MIPT, MISA and MSU have developed a new method for the synthesis of ultrahard carbon material – fullerene, which now occupies the first place in the list of the hardest materials. From a practical point of view, this solid form of carbon is interesting primarily for skilled processing of metals and other materials.
