Russia Produces First Batch of Newest Nuclear Fuel Pellets
The first batch of the newest nuclear fuel pellets have been produced at Rosatom’s Mining and Chemical Facility in Krasnoyarsk Region. This type of fuel is being prepared for mass production for the first time in the world. The so-called MOX fuel (mixed oxide fuel) is a mixture of uranium and plutonium oxides. This fuel can be used in fast-neutron reactors.
Nuclear power station units with fast-neutron reactors will considerably improve the fuel base of nuclear energetics and minimize radioactive wastes due to a closed nuclear fuel cycle. Fast reactor technology is developed in very few countries, and Russia is a world leader in this field.
“The first batch of MOX fuel tablets fully meets the density specifications,” the company’s press center reported.
It should be noted that Rosatom’s Mining and Chemical Facility is Russia’s leading company in this field, dealing with the creation of a complete technological complex in the sphere of spent nuclear fuel management and the closed nuclear fuel cycle.
