Russia Produces First Nitride Fuel Rod Assembly
The first experimental fuel rod assembly with advanced nitride nuclear fuel was produced at Rosatom’s Siberian Chemical Facility. Such assemblies will be used in prototype nuclear reactors as part of the atomic energy of the future. This information was presented by the company’s press service on Thursday.
“The first full-scale TVS-4 fuel rod assembly with nitride fuel has been successfully tested. This assembly is designed to be loaded into the BN-600 fast-neutron reactor, the third block of the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant,” the press service reported.
It’s worth noting that nuclear power station units with fast-neutron reactors will considerably improve the fuel base of nuclear energetics and minimize radioactive wastes due to a closed nuclear fuel cycle. Fast reactor technology is developed in very few countries, and Russia is a world leader in this field.
