Vega to Begin Producing Short-Range Military Drones Next Year
Russia’s Vega Radio Engineering Corporation plans to start manufacturing short-range unmanned aerial vehicles in Rybinsk (Yaroslavl Region). This came in a statement by Director of UAV Development Programs Arkady Syroyezhko.
“According to our estimates, the Russian Defence Ministry will need several hundred UAVs by 2020. We should think about how and where to produce the requested amount of hardware the client needs. We have set up an investment project, and next year we are launching a short-range UAV systems production facility in Rybinsk,” Mr. Syroyezhko said, noting that the market of short-range and medium-range UAVs is a completely new branch of production, and Russia does not have an adequate basis for such industry just yet.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, UAVs will be extensively used in the future to solve strategic military problems due to their stealth and greater combat stability as compared to manned aircraft.
