Modern Arctic military town for parts of the Eastern Military District was put into operation on Wrangel Island, where the restoration of infrastructure is under way after 22 years of absence there of the Russian military, the head of the press service of the district Alexander Gordeev told to RIA Novosti.

Russia intends to strengthen its position in the Arctic on all fronts: military and political, financial and economic. President Vladimir Putin in April called for the establishment there of a single basing system of surface ships and submarines of the new generation, to strengthen the border, as well as to create a new public authority to implement the policy of Russia in the Arctic.

“Arctic modular town “Polar Star” is opened on Wrangel Island. This is the first town of this type put into operation in the Arctic, one at Cape Schmidt is in the assembly stage,” Gordeev said.
