Russia May Build Mistral-Class Warships Independently
Russia doesn’t depend on France in building own helicopter carriers similar to French Mistral-class carriers, and is capable of constructing such warships itself. This was announced by Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Victor Bursuk.
On Thursday, Presidential Chief of Staff Sergey Ivanov said that Russia would sue France if Paris refused to fulfill the Mistral contract.
“We are not dependent on France in any way. It is just one of the contracts of military-technical cooperation and nothing more. The Russian shipbuilding program envisaged building warships of this class, and it will certainly be implemented,” Mr. Bursuk told reporters.
Earlier in September, France threatened to suspend the supply of the helicopter carriers due to the crisis in Ukraine. Later, a spokesman for the French Government emphasized that the delivery of the ship was not officially suspended and that French President Francois Hollande was simply outlining his political stance.
