Russian Navy to Receive Kazan Nuclear Submarine in 2016
The Russian Navy will receive the first improved Project 885M Yasen-class nuclear-powered submarine, the Kazan, in 2016. This information was presented by Deputy Director General of Russia’s Malakhit Design Bureau Nikolay Novoselov on Tuesday.
It’s worth mentioning that the Kazan was laid down at the Sevmash shipyard in 2009, and the transfer to the Russian Navy was previously scheduled for 2017.
In January 2013, Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu said that under the state armaments program until 2020, the Russian Navy would receive seven Borey-class strategic missile submarines and seven Yasen-class multi-purpose nuclear submarines. According to previous reports, the Russian Navy expects to receive more than 50 ships and supply vessels before the end of the year.
