Russia to Create Shipbuilding Cluster in Kaliningrad Region

Russia plans to establish a shipbuilding cluster in Kaliningrad Region at the site of the Baltic Yantar shipbuilding plant before 2017. This came in a statement by Acting Director General Viktor Tutynin on Tuesday.

According to Mr. Tutynin, the plant will be able to build 6-8 ships already by 2020 after the modernization and enlargement of the Yantar capacities. As the share of state defence orders will decrease by 2018-2020, the plant whose capacities will grow 2-4 times will focus on civil shipbuilding.

It’s worth noting that large-scale work was performed at the plant to develop its production capacities. The Industry and Trade Ministry has already allocated 15 billion rubles for this purpose. At the same time, it is necessary to create an interregional center for training and retraining to ensure the efficient operation of the shipbuilding cluster. Today, the company employs about 1,500 welders, pipe fitters, and mounters.
