Russia to Produce First Hypersonic Missiles by 2020
Russia may manufacture the first air-launched hypersonic missiles within the next six years. This statement was made by Director General of the Tactical Missile Systems Corporation Boris Obnosov on Thursday.
“In my estimation, the first hypersonic products will be manufactured before 2020. We have approached this step. We are talking about speeds of six to eight Mach. Achieving higher rates is a long-term perspective,” Mr. Obnosov told journalists, noting that hypersonic missiles will be air-launched at first, using the initial velocity of the carrier aircraft to reach the speeds necessary to run a ramjet engine.
The Director General also said that manned hypersonic vehicles would appear no earlier than 2030.
“I believe that manned flights at hypersonic speeds will be possible between 2030 and 2040,” Mr. Obnosov concluded.
