Russian Navy to Adopt Advanced Submarine This Year

The new Rostov-on-Don diesel-electric submarine is going to complete trials and is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by the end of 2014.

After its transfer to the Naval Forces, the submarine will make a two-week voyage from the shipyard in St. Petersburg to the Northern Fleet’s base, where submariners will conduct tests of systems and weapons in the deep regions of the Barents Sea.

It should be noted that the Rostov-on-Don diesel-electric submarine, the second ship of the modernized Project 636, was laid down on November 21, 2011 at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. According to the press service of the Russian Defence Ministry, the Northern Fleet is currently testing the Project 636.3 submarine (the Novorossiysk) that is the first out of six boats built for the Black Sea Fleet.
