Russian Federation to Request Expansion of Arctic Shelf in 2015
After successful scientific expedition to the Arctic Russia is going in the first quarter of 2015 to make a request to the UN for expansion of the Arctic shelf, the head of “Rosnedra” Valery Pak reported.
As the Minister of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation Sergey Donskoy reported in October, the expedition research vessel “Akademik Fedorov” fulfilled all the planned work in the Arctic, thus the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources completed a study for the formation of an application to the UN for expansion of the Arctic shelf.
From 2001, Russia claims the hydrocarbon-rich portion of the shelf, including the Lomonosov and Mendeleyev ridges, but its application was rejected due to lack of information. If the researchers can prove that these ridges are the continuation of Russia’s continental shelf, the country will have a priority right to exploit these resources, the volume of which, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources, can reach 5 billion tons of standard fuel.
