Russia Developing New Missile Defence Systems
Russia has been developing its own missile defence systems similar to Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) and Ground-based Midcourse Defence (GMD) of the United States. This was announced by Chief Engineer of the Almaz-Antey Corporation Pavel Sozinov on Monday.
“Russia has been developing a system analogous to THAAD, making it possible to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles on a limited scale. It will undergo trials in the short run,” Mr. Sozinov stated, noting that Russia has also been developing a system similar to, but more mobile than the GMD long-range ballistic missile shield.
“At the request of the Russian Defence Ministry, we must provide more efficient interception than the Americans,” Mr. Sozinov said, adding that the prototypes of these complexes will be adopted by the Russian Army in the short term.
