The forces of the Western, Central and Eastern Military Districts will be transferred to the new United Strategic Command in the Arctic before December 15. The entire Northern Fleet will be transferred to the Command. This was announced by a source in the Defence Ministry on Wednesday.
“The Fleet will remain at its bases, but will be transferred in full. The First Command of the Air Force and the Air Defence with its units and infrastructure, as well as the Second Command and the Third Command of the Central and Eastern Military Districts and some other forces will be partially transferred by the date,” the source noted.
It should be noted that Russia is currently developing infrastructure and forming military units in the Arctic to ensure military security in the region. According to Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoygu, Russia will complete deployment of military units along the Arctic belt by the end of 2014.
