Russian Army to Adopt S-500 Missile System by 2016
The Russian Army may adopt the latest S-500 anti-aircraft missile system under development already in 2016. This statement was made by Head of the Russian Air Force Major General Victor Gumenny.
“The delivery of the first samples is likely to take place after 2015,” Mr. Gumenny said, noting that the advanced anti-aircraft missile systems will be able to partially solve the problems of air and space defence and fight the hypersonic weaponry.
In July 2014, a source in the Russian defence industry said that the Armed Forces had successfully tested long-range missiles, which will be part of the S-500 missile system.
According to the information available, the S-500 is capable of detecting and simultaneously engaging up to 10 ballistic targets flying at a speed of up to 7 km/s, as well as warheads of hypersonic cruise missiles.
