Russia Developing New Submarine with Two Hulls
Russia’s advanced multipurpose nuclear submarine will have two hulls and a displacement of less than 12,000 tons. This was announced by Deputy Director of the Malakhit Design Bureau Nikolay Novoselov.
“The submarine will have a displacement of up to 12,000 tons, like the Yasen project. We are developing the fifth generation on our own initiative, the Defence Ministry has not presented a technical assignment yet,” Mr. Novoselov said, noting that there are technical requirements, which the Russian Navy will observe in any case.
“The concept of a dual hull (durable internal and light external) is also a tradition of the Russian submarine production. We believe that it is more advantageous design than a single hull,” the designer pointed out, adding that the Yasen-M multipurpose nuclear submarines are different from the conventional Yasen project in terms of their electronic equipment.
