Russia’s Defence Ministry to Take Delivery of Upgraded Tu-160 Bomber
The Russian Defence Ministry will receive the modernized Tu-160 supersonic strategic bomber on December 19. This information was presented by a source in the defence industry.
It should be noted that the first flight after modernization of the Tu-160 was performed on November 16, 2014.
“The Tu-160 named Andrey Tupolev will be transferred by the manufacturer to the Air Russian Force on December 19,” the source pointed out.
Vladislav Goncharenko, Deputy Head of the Military Aircraft Programs Department at the United Aircraft Corporation, earlier stated that Russia had launched a program aimed at modernizing long-range aircraft. As part of the contracts concluded with Tupolev, the company is modernizing Tu-22M3, Tu-95MS and Tu-160. Ten aircraft have been modernized this year.
The Tu-160 bomber is a supersonic heavy bomber, designed for striking strategic targets with nuclear and conventional weapons deep in continental theaters of operation.
