Siberian Scientists Discovered World’s Smallest Luminous Molecule
Krasnoyarsk scholars-biophysics synthesized in the laboratory the world’s smallest luminous molecule of luciferase from the marine copepod Metridia longa; the discovery may eventually be used in medicine, for example, during the diagnosis of cancer, an official representative of the Siberian Federal University (SFU) Yaroslava Zhigalova said.
“The method developed by Krasnoyarsk is biophysics unique. Eventually, it can find wide application in practice, for example, in medical analyzes, including the diagnosis of cancer. It will allow to observe a response of model tumors to the new drugs, without the use of radioactive labels. The scientists took about one and a half years to the implementation of this project,”- Zhigalova said.
According to the authors of scientific discovery, using molecular biology techniques it was able to reproduce the natural conditions of protein synthesis.
