Russia and India Negotiate Construction of New Frigates
Russia and India are negotiating the construction for the Indian Navy of three additional frigates and the lease of the second nuclear submarine, the spokesman for the Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade (TSAMTO) told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
At present, the Russian Defence Minister, Army General Sergei Shoigu is on an official visit to India – the largest importer of Russian weapons.
“Negotiations are under way on the construction of three frigates of Project 11356 for the Indian Navy at the shipyard “Yantar”, the representative of TSAMTO said.
He recalled that the first three frigates of Project 11356 were built at the Baltic Shipyard in 1999-2004. The frigates of second trio received advanced weaponry and improved performance. Unlike the first three ships, they received Russian-Indian missile system with a supersonic cruise missile “Brahmos” PJ-10 instead of the missile complex Club-N.
