Russian Army to Adopt New Sarmat ICBM by 2020

Full-scale tests of the new Russian Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile may be held in a year or a year and a half after the drop tests scheduled for 2015. This information was presented by a source in the Russian defence industry.

“If the drop tests are conducted according to the plan and the missile performs well, it will be tested in a year or a year and a half,” the source stated, noting that the drop tests are aimed at performing the starting procedure of the missile.

“We use a special platform for checking lift capacity of the missile,” the source said, adding that it is difficult to specify the schedule of the drop tests at the moment, but they are usually performed at the end of the year.

Deputy Defence Minister Yury Borisov earlier said that the drop tests of the Sarmat ICBM were scheduled for 2015. Besides, the Russian Defence Ministry announced that the new missile would enter service in 2018-2020.
