Russia to Build Sarmat ICBM Prototype in May or June
A prototype of the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) will be manufactured in May or June. About 30% of components have already been produced at the Krasnoyarsk machine-building plant. This information was presented by a source in the Russian defence industry.
“The manufacturer will finalize a prototype of the Sarmat ICBM in two or three months. The first pop-up test will follow. If it is successful, no more pop-up tests will be performed. The phase of flight tests will begin in 2016,” the source said, adding that the purpose is to check operation of a powder pressure accumulator.
“The prototype will have the same size and mass as the future combat version. The prototype will carry a dummy, instead of a multiple warhead. The booster will not be used. Therefore, the Sarmat will rise several dozen meters above the silo to fall nearby,” the source stated.
On February 21, Deputy Defence Minister Yury Borisov said that the new ICBM would have several configurations. The warhead will have a mass of ten tons.
