Russian Design Bureaus Working on Project of New Icebreaker

Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute together with CDB “Iceberg” and FSUE “Atomflot” are designing a new nuclear-powered icebreaker “Leader”.

Future icebreaker “Leader” will have a capacity of 110 MW and will be able to overcome the ice thickness of 4.5 meters. The icebreaker will be used for wiring large tankers, since the width of his body will be about 50 meters. Thus, the “Leader” by its characteristics will surpass the universal icebreaker of latest generation LC-60 constructed at “Baltic Shipyard”. In total it is planned to build three such icebreakers, the first of which will be commissioned before the end of 2017.

Also Russia develops a multifunctional shallow-draft nuclear icebreaker, which is planned to be used as an icebreaker-supply vessel, icebreaker rescue. In particular, these breakers can be used to work on the shelf. Preliminary design of a new icebreaker will be ready by 2016.

Cyclops to Monitor Road Traffic

The resident of the Information Technology cluster of the Fund “Skolkovo” – the Company “Vocord” introduces a new solution for traffic control VOCORD Cyclops. It is reported by the press service of the company.

Multiband complex of traffic control VOCORD Cyclops is intended for automatic recognition of license plates, recording of traffic rules and traffic control on a straight road.

Solution VOCORD Cyclops, which is part of the hardware-software complex VOCORD Traffic, controls up to 4 lanes in one or two directions of the road at the same time and solves a range of problems in fully automatic mode: captures all the vehicles and determines their speed; recognizes the license plates of different countries and formats; collects statistics on traffic flow (number of vehicles, the average flow rate, the average density, the average distance between cars) and commits traffic violations.

Russia May Manufacture Rockets in Komsomolsk-on-Amur

The rockets to be launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome under construction may be produced on the basis of the priority development territory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. This was announced by Skolkovo Vice President for Activities Development in Russia’s Far East, Sergey Zhukov.

It should be noted that the Commission on the Implementation of Investment Projects in the Far East has already approved the first three priority development territories with a private investment volume of more than 50 billion rubles, including Nadezhdinskaya (Primorye), Khabarovsk and Komsomolsk (Khabarovsk Region) territories.

As explained by Mr. Zhukov, the Soyuz and Angara rockets are produced in Samara and Omsk that are far from the Vostochny Cosmodrome. Therefore, it may be reasonable to produce the rockets in Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

It’s necessary to mention that the Vostochny Cosmodrome is being built in Amur Region near Uglegorsk. The first spacecraft is scheduled to be launched in 2015.

NASA Willing to Continue Cooperating with Russia on ISS Project

The USA plans to cooperate with Russia and other countries on the ISS project at least for the next 10 years. This was stated by Allard Beutel, a spokesman for the NASA, on Wednesday.

Commenting on the decision of Russia’s Space Agency to continue using the station until 2024, Mr. Beutel said that President Barack Obama’s Administration had also announced its plans to jointly use the ISS until 2024. Mr. Beutel stressed that the NASA welcomed cooperation with foreign partners on the ISS. The spokesman refused to comment on the plans of Russia’s Space Agency to create a Russian orbital system on the basis of modules that can be undocked from the ISS. Moscow plans to suspend international use of the station in 10 years and use parts of the Russian segment to construct its own orbital system.

Last year, the USA suspended cooperation with Russia in the space sphere due to the situation around Ukraine, except for the ISS project.

Russia to Supply UAE with AU-220M Automatic Turret

Russia will integrate its AU-220M automatic turret with an armored vehicle built by the United Arab Emirates. This was envisaged by a memorandum signed by Russia’s Rosoboronexport and UAE’s Emirates Defence Technology during the IDEX 2015 international exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

The document was signed by Rosoboronexport Deputy Director General Igor Sevastyanov and Emirates Defence Technology CEO Mohamed Al Suwaidi.

It should be noted that the AU-220M module is designed for armored vehicles, both new and undergoing modernization. The naval version of the module is capable of hitting targets on land, air and sea, with a horizontal range of 12 kilometers and a vertical range of 8 kilometers. The module will be integrated with an 8×8 platform produced by EDT, presumably the Enigma Armored Modular Fighting Vehicle. The AU-220M is manufactured by the Burevestnik Central Research Institute.
