Jetpack to Be Produced for Astronauts

Mark Lee tests the SAFER Backpack

NPP “Zvezda” in March will make a demonstration “jetpack” for astronauts.

This was announced today to TASS by the company CEO Sergei Pozdnyakov. “We are currently completing work on making a demonstrator and expect that in March it would be ready to carry out tests on a special stand,” Pozdnyakov said.

He explained that after the test, the demonstrator is scheduled to be presented to the representatives of Roscosmos, the Cosmonaut Training Center, RSC “Energia” and other interested organizations. “The next step is producing of prototypes,” the official said. According to him, this will require a different level of funding.

Proactive development work on the “knapsack” started last year. The device is created by analogy with the American system SAFER (Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue) and is intended for the automatic return of astronauts who went on a dangerous distance from the space station. The American system uses a manual control.
